For 2014 we are going to make a point of reviewing everything we carry, demonstrating for you the interior and exterior features and condition, the wheels and tires, trunk space, as well as an overview of power, technology, economy and driving characteristics to give you factual information as well as information unique to this particular vehicle so that you can enjoy a more intelligent shopping experience without ever having to step onto the lot. The 328i's naturally aspirated inline-6 is otherworldly in its smoothness from idle to redline, and it has enough power to suit most tastes. . Logic7 surround-sound audio is an optional upgrade. The coupe and wagon have not been tested, and both have different-enough body structures that the sedan's crash-test ratings cannot apply. If you wanted a car with space and versatility, then the 3-sport wagon is it.
Fold the rear seat and the Sport Wagon holds 58 cuft and the X3 holds 71 cuft---so the X3 holds about 20-22% more. Both Sedan and Sports Wagon variants are offered in 328 guise, while a fuel-efficient diesel engine can be had with the 335d. Bluetooth enabling for mobile phones is easily programmed. The diesel-powered 335d, meanwhile, comes only with a six-speed automatic. My test vehicle had a well-weighted clutch and decent gate placements, but the shifter had longish, rubbery throws; even with practice, upshifts took far too long.
For a busy Los Angeles driver, this seemed like a wasted opportunity. By the way, he says a 328i is one of the best cars ever made. There's also a high-performance V-8-powered M3 and a diesel 335d; we cover the M3 on Cars. Radio and climate controls are easy to find and use, if a bit rickety in certain areas, and my test car's heated seats worked quickly. Infact it is an added cost to the consumer.
Driving around Chicago in the winter involves too many cold mornings, too many potholes and too many roads that run in any direction you'd like, so long as they're straight. At the same time, the 3 Series is a wonderful long-distance cruiser, boasting both a supple ride and a hushed cabin. All but the wagon are available as the rear-drive 335i, while the sedan and coupe can be had in 335i xDrive form. The screen has an anti-glare coating that comes off or scratches if you try to clean it. Lots of bells n whistles, with a true luxurious look n feel. The flip-out dashboard cupholders are flimsy contraptions, and one passenger complained that they intruded on her space.
Only complaints would be the lack of certain things I would expect in a car of this price that are not standard. The 335i gets a 3. Fortified with abundant power and torque, both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants, in either body style and with either transmission, are plenty fast from zero to 60 mph and easily capable of coping with any kind of traffic situation. Go ahead, make the investment. In government crash tests, the sedan and wagon received four out of five stars for frontal collision protection and five stars for side protection.
The 3 Series isn't the only vehicle body-type with such capabilities, though; others come close, and many do so for considerably less money. It provides excellent precision and good. But even as the twilight of this model's production run approaches, the 3 Series continues to reign supreme.
Powertrains and Performance The 328i models are powered by a 3. The steering wheel unwinds to center naturally, with none of the pockets of inexplicable numbness or sudden resistance that many European cars exhibit. The last 328i I drove — a 2007 automatic convertible — didn't upshift smoothly around town. The convertible's available heat-reflective leather does a wonderful job of keeping occupants' posteriors cool. Here are my observations: Plus: Powerful but not stunning acceleration.
The convertible scored Good for frontal impacts but Marginal for side impacts. Be aware that if used and no longer under warranty, it could cost you dearly. More fun than should be legal with the top down. It cannot be repaired and if you have a flat, that tire or all tires need to be replaced entirely. The convertible offers a reasonable cargo hold when the hardtop is up, but predictably shrinks considerably when the top is lowered. For my career I have sold over 10,000 cars so I hope to bring you far more insight than you might ever know to even ask.
I show you in some videos how to see if a car has been in an accident, how to make a great buy on a car with a bad Carfax, or why I wouldn't personally buy a car even if it has favorable reviews. But, the X3 has 8 inches of ground clearance which is about twice that of the Sport Wagon. Click for a full list of safety features. After, we very easily loaded my bike in the back of the wagon rather than have me pedal home on dark streets. The other part is the inherent goodness of its chassis.
The Climate package adds heated front seats and steering wheel, retractable headlight washers and fold-down rear seats though the latter are unavailable in the convertible. I find it of interest to compare models within a brand. I use the manual type shifter since I am used to a manual transmission and it works just like a manual except there is no clutch. The Sport Package nets tauter suspension, sport seats and 17-inch wheels and tires. Optional on the rear-wheel-drive 335i, it's worth checking out.
